How to download a YouTube thumbnail

  1. Copy the video link

In the YouTube app, tap Share under the video, then Copy link. On a computer, copy the address from your browser's address bar. Shorts links work too.

  2. Paste it into the box

Tap Paste, or long-press the box and choose Paste, then tap Get thumbnails. You can also type the 11-character video ID on its own.

  3. Download the size you need

Every available size appears with a preview. Tap Download on the one you want and the JPG is saved to your device, usually in your Downloads folder.

Thumbnail sizes explained

YouTube stores several copies of each thumbnail at fixed sizes. Here is what each one is and when to use it.

  • Max resolution

    1280 × 720 · 16:9

The largest and sharpest version, in widescreen 16:9 with no black bars. YouTube only creates it for videos uploaded in HD (720p or higher), so older or low-resolution videos don't have it.

  • Standard definition

    640 × 480 · 4:3

A 4:3 image. For normal widescreen videos the picture sits between black bars at the top and bottom. Available for most videos, but not all.

    sddefault.jpg
  • High quality

    480 × 360 · 4:3

The version that exists for every public video, also 4:3 with black bars on widescreen content. A reliable fallback when the larger sizes are missing.

    hqdefault.jpg
  • Medium quality

    320 × 180 · 16:9

A small widescreen image without black bars. Handy for compact previews, lists, and placeholders where file size matters more than detail.

If the creator uploaded a custom thumbnail, the max resolution version is that exact image scaled to 1280×720. If not, every size is a frame YouTube picked from the video.

Frequently asked questions

Is SaveFast free to use?

Yes. There is no account, no download limit, no watermark and no paid version. The tool has no ads and never asks you to install an app or browser extension.

Does it work for YouTube Shorts?

Yes. Paste a youtube.com/shorts/… link and you'll get the same sizes as a regular video. YouTube stores Shorts thumbnails in its standard landscape sizes, so the vertical picture usually appears with bars on the sides.

Why is the max resolution (1280×720) thumbnail missing?

YouTube only generates the 1280×720 version for videos uploaded in HD. Older videos, low-resolution uploads and videos that are still processing don't have one. Instead of showing YouTube's small gray placeholder, we hide that option. Use Standard definition or High quality instead.

Is it legal to download and use YouTube thumbnails?

Saving a thumbnail for personal reference is generally fine, but the image is owned by the person who made it. Reusing it in your own video, website, or product usually needs the creator's permission unless it is your own thumbnail or your use clearly falls under fair use. This is general information, not legal advice.

Where is the image saved on my phone?

On Android, it goes to your Downloads folder and shows up in the Files app and most gallery apps. On iPhone, Safari saves it to the Downloads folder in the Files app. To put it in Photos, tap Open in new tab, then long-press the image and choose Save to Photos.

Can I get thumbnails from private or deleted videos?

No. YouTube removes public thumbnails when a video is made private or deleted, so there is nothing to download. Unlisted videos still work if you have the link.

Is this site safe?

Each thumbnail has exactly one Download button. There are no pop-ups, redirects, or hidden downloads, and nothing to install. Previews load straight from YouTube's own image server, and the file you save is a plain JPG image.

Do you keep a record of what I download?

No. We don't use accounts, cookies, or analytics, and we don't store the links you paste. The link is read in your browser, and downloads are passed through from YouTube without being saved. See our Privacy Policy for details.
